Sheer fabric is a lightweight, open weave that lets daylight through while softening glare and screening the room from outside by day. In Malaysian homes and condominiums it is usually hung as the inner layer of a double curtain track, with a dimout or blackout curtain behind it for the evening.
The JOTEX sheer range is built for wide windows. CALLIE is a 100% polyester sheer at around 89 gsm and 325 cm wide, and VALERY is an 80% polyester, 20% linen blend at around 106 gsm and 320 cm wide for a more natural, textured look. Widths above three metres let curtain makers run the fabric sideways and make floor-to-ceiling sheers with no vertical seams. POSH Creation adds further sheer designs for interior design projects.
Polyester sheers wash well, hold their shape and resist fading better than natural-fibre voiles, which matters on windows that take direct afternoon sun. Sheers suit S-fold, ripple fold and French pleat headings alike; allow two to two-and-a-half times the track width for fullness. What is the difference between sheer and voile?
Voile is one kind of sheer: a soft, lightweight plain weave. Sheer is the wider family and also covers textured, linen-look and patterned translucent fabrics. In Malaysia the two words are often used for the same thing, the thin day curtain behind the main curtain.
Can people see through sheer curtains at night?
Yes. A sheer gives privacy by day because it is brighter outside than in, but at night, with lights on inside, people outside can see in. Hang the sheer on a double track with a dimout or blackout curtain behind it for night-time privacy.
How much sheer fabric do I need?
For pleated and ripple fold headings, allow two to two-and-a-half times the track width. With extra-wide sheers such as CALLIE at 325 cm, the fabric can be run sideways for drops of up to about three metres after hems, with no vertical joins.
