Short answer
Tab top curtains hang from fabric loops that slip over a pole; rod pocket, or slot head, curtains have a sewn channel that the pole slides through. Both are simple, inexpensive and relaxed in look, and use about 1.5 to 2 times the pole width. Neither slides easily, so they suit curtains that are rarely drawn: decorative side panels, cafe curtains, sheers left closed and rooms where light above the pole does not matter.
How they hang
| Tab top | Rod pocket (slot head) | |
|---|---|---|
| Fixing | Fabric loops over the pole | A sewn channel the pole slides through |
| Look | Relaxed; the pole shows between tabs | Soft gathers; the pole is hidden |
| Opening and closing | Possible but stiff | Hard; best left in place |
| Fullness | About 1.5 to 2 times | About 1.5 to 2 times; sheers can take more |
| Hangs from | Pole only | Pole or narrow rod only |

Where they work
- Cafe curtains: a short rod pocket sheer across the lower half of a kitchen or bathroom window. See Kitchen and Bathroom Curtains.
- Decorative side panels that frame a window and are never drawn.
- Sheers left closed for daytime privacy.
- Casual rooms: beach houses, children's rooms, studios.
Where to choose another heading
- Curtains you open every day: choose eyelet, S-fold or pleats, which slide easily. See Eyelet Curtains.
- Dark bedrooms: light shows above the pole; use a ceiling track instead. See Curtain Track vs Curtain Pole.
- Heavy fabrics: tabs and channels bunch and drag on the pole.
Tip
If you like the tab top look but need curtains that slide, ask your curtain maker for hidden tabs on rings, or choose eyelets in a matching pole finish.
Fabrics
Light and medium fabrics suit both headings best: sheers, voiles, linen-looks and soft dimouts. Polyester keeps its shape and washes well, which matters because these curtains are taken off the pole to wash. See Sheer Curtains and Linen-Look Curtains.
Washing
Slide the curtain off the pole, wash it cool and gentle if the label allows, and slide it back while slightly damp so the gathers settle. See How to Wash Curtains.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between tab top and rod pocket curtains?
Tab top curtains hang from fabric loops over the pole, so the pole shows. Rod pocket curtains have a sewn channel the pole slides through, so the pole is hidden.
Do tab top curtains slide easily?
Not very. The fabric tabs drag on the pole, so they suit curtains that are rarely drawn.
What is a slot head curtain?
Another name for a rod pocket curtain: a curtain with a sewn channel at the top that the pole slides through.
How much fullness do tab top curtains need?
About 1.5 to 2 times the pole width. Sheers can take more for a softer look.
Are rod pocket curtains good for cafe curtains?
Yes. A short rod pocket sheer across the lower half of a window is the classic cafe curtain.
