Short answer

Care homes need fabrics that are safe, easy to clean and calm. Use easy-glide curtains with dimout or blackout lining in residents' rooms, launderable antimicrobial-tested fabric for privacy curtains, and seating of 30,000 rubs or more, or wipe-clean vinyl where seats are disinfected. Meet the fire standard the project or authority sets, and use colour contrast to help residents.

What do care homes need from fabric?

  • Safety: curtains that are easy to open and close, no loose cords, and the fire performance the project requires.
  • Hygiene: fabrics that stand up to frequent laundering or wiping, and antimicrobial-tested fabric for privacy curtains.
  • Durability: seating used all day, every day.
  • A homely feel: calm colours and soft textures, not a clinical look.

Which curtains suit residents' rooms?

  • S-fold curtains on a smooth-running ceiling track, or a motorised track with a switch, so residents can open them without effort. See S-Fold Curtains.
  • Curtains ending about 1 cm above the floor, so nothing trails to trip on.
  • Dimout or blackout-lined curtains for sleep, and a sheer for daytime glare.
  • Fabric that launders well and shrinks little, such as polyester.

See Curtains for Elderly Parents' Rooms for more on ease of use.

What about privacy and cubicle curtains?

Shared rooms and treatment areas need privacy curtains on ceiling tracks. JOTEX Medical BIOLOGY and CHEMISTRY are 100% polyester knits, 280 cm wide for seamless panels, rated 30,000 rubs and antibacterial-tested. Antimicrobial fabric supports infection control; it does not replace regular cleaning and curtain changes.

See Hospital Cubicle Curtains for testing and laundering.

Which seating fabrics work in a care home?

  • General lounge seating: a tight, hard-wearing fabric of 30,000 rubs or more. YarnGuard PURIFY and REPEL and the textured MARC and BLAKE are rated 40,000 rubs.
  • Seats that are disinfected often or where continence is a concern: wipe-clean vinyl or PU. See Faux Leather: PU vs PVC.
  • Cleaning: check the cleaning code, and test the home's cleaning products on a sample first.

See Clinic Waiting Room Upholstery.

How can colour and pattern help residents?

  • Contrast: a chair seat that contrasts with the floor, and curtains that contrast with the wall, are easier to see for residents with poor eyesight.
  • Calm patterns: plains, textures and small, gentle patterns. Busy, high-contrast patterns can confuse some residents, including people living with dementia.
  • Matt finishes: they reduce glare compared with shiny fabrics.

What about fire safety and laundering?

The fire standard is set by the project and the local authority. Ask for the test report for the exact fabric, and check how laundering affects it: treated fire-retardant finishes can wash out, while inherently fire-retardant fibres keep the property. See Fire-Retardant Fabric.

Frequently asked questions

What fabric is best for nursing home chairs?

A tight, hard-wearing fabric of 30,000 rubs or more for general seating, and wipe-clean vinyl or PU where seats are disinfected often.

Do care home curtains need to be fire-retardant?

Usually. The project and the local fire authority set the standard; ask for the test report for the exact fabric.

Do antimicrobial curtains replace cleaning?

No. They support infection control, but curtains still need regular cleaning and changing.

What colours suit a dementia-friendly room?

Calm colours, plain or gently patterned fabrics, and clear contrast between seats, floors and walls. Avoid busy, high-contrast patterns.
