Short answer
For clinic and dental waiting rooms, use a tight, hard-wearing fabric of 30,000 rubs or more in general seating areas, and wipe-clean vinyl or PU where seats are disinfected between patients. Check the cleaning code and test the clinic's cleaning products on a sample. Choose calm mid-tones that hide wear, and meet the fire standard the project or building requires.
Fabric or vinyl?
| Hard-wearing fabric | Vinyl or PU | |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort | Warm and breathable | Can feel cold or sticky |
| Look | Softer, less clinical | More clinical |
| Cleaning | Vacuum, spot clean; check the cleaning code | Wipe and disinfect |
| Noise | Absorbs some sound | Reflects sound |
| Long-term wear | Good with a tight weave and high rub count | Cheaper PU can crack and peel |
| Best for | General waiting areas, consult room chairs | Treatment areas, seats disinfected between patients |
Many clinics mix the two: wipe-clean seats where infection control demands it, and fabric where comfort and a calmer feel matter more. See Fabric Sofa vs Leather Sofa.
What to look for in a fabric
- Rub count: 30,000 or more for waiting room seating. See Martindale Rub Test Explained.
- Tight weave or short-pile velvet: nothing to snag, and spills sit on the surface longer.
- Cleaning code: W or W/S allows water-based cleaning. See How to Remove Stains from a Fabric Sofa.
- Disinfectant compatibility: alcohol, chlorine and other strong products can fade or weaken fabric; test a sample with the clinic's own products.
- Removable or replaceable covers on high-use seats.
In the JOTEX range, YarnGuard PURIFY and REPEL velvets and the textured weaves BLAKE, MARC and VELA are rated at 40,000 rubs, as are TEKUSU OMAKE and SUZUME.
Watch out
Do not assume a fabric is antimicrobial or disinfectant-safe unless the supplier gives you the test report. Ask for it, and test the clinic's cleaning products on a sample first.
Colour and atmosphere
- Calm mid-tones such as sage, soft blue, stone and warm grey relax patients and hide wear.
- Avoid very pale seats, which show marks quickly, and very dark ones, which show dust and lint.
- Textured or melange weaves disguise wear between deep cleans. See Sofa Fabric Colours That Hide Dirt.
- Children's areas: a cheerful accent colour on a hard-wearing weave.
Fire safety
Healthcare and commercial premises usually have fire requirements for furniture and curtains, set by the project, building owner or local authority. Ask the furniture maker which standard applies, and ask for the fabric's fire test report before ordering. See fire-retardant fabrics.
Curtains in clinics
Consultation and treatment rooms usually need privacy curtains as well as seating. JOTEX Medical supplies antimicrobial cubicle curtain fabrics, BIOLOGY and CHEMISTRY, 280 cm wide for seamless panels. See Hospital Cubicle Curtains. For reception windows, a dimout keeps glare off screens. See Dimout Curtains.
