Short answer

By the sea, curtains face strong sun and glare, salty damp air and wind. Choose polyester sheers and dimouts that resist fading, creasing and mould, with a lining or blackout on sun-facing windows, and solution-dyed acrylic for balconies and outdoor seating. Use rust-resistant tracks and hooks, and clean curtains more often to remove salt and grime.

What does the seaside do to curtains?

Which curtain fabrics work best by the sea?

  • Polyester sheers and dimouts: resist fading, creasing and mould better than natural fibres. See Polyester Curtain Fabric.
  • Linen-look polyester: the relaxed, beachy look of linen without its creasing and mildew. See Linen-Look Curtains.
  • Blackout or lined curtains on west- and sea-facing bedrooms, to cut glare and heat. See Heat-Reducing Curtains.
  • Pale and mid-tones show sun-fading less than deep, saturated colours.

Pure linen, cotton and silk look lovely by the sea but fade, weaken and mildew faster there.

What fabric suits balconies and outdoor seating?

Indoor curtain fabric is not made for rain and direct sun. For balcony cushions, outdoor sofas and shades, use outdoor fabric such as JOTEX Outdoor's solution-dyed acrylics, including PATIO, BREEZE and SHORE, which are coloured through the fibre to resist fading.

See Outdoor Fabric: Solution-Dyed Acrylic and Outdoor Curtains for Gazebos and Patios.

Which tracks and fittings should you use?

  • Aluminium tracks with plastic gliders, or poles in powder-coated aluminium or stainless steel.
  • Plastic or stainless hooks; plain steel hooks can rust and leave brown marks on the heading.
  • Tiebacks or holdbacks to keep curtains out of the wind when windows are open.

See Curtain Track vs Pole and Curtain Tiebacks and Holdbacks.

How do you care for curtains in a seaside home?

  • Vacuum monthly to remove sand and dust.
  • Wash a little more often than inland; salt residue holds moisture. See How to Wash Curtains.
  • Make sure curtains are fully dry before closing up a holiday home.
  • When the house is empty, leave curtains slightly open and air the rooms when you return.

See Mouldy Curtains if spots appear.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best curtains for a beach house?

Polyester or linen-look polyester sheers and dimouts, with blackout or lining on sun-facing bedrooms, on aluminium tracks.

Does salt air damage curtains?

Salt residue holds moisture, which encourages mildew, and it corrodes metal fittings. Regular cleaning and rust-resistant fittings help.

Can indoor curtains be used on a balcony?

Not for long. Use outdoor fabric such as solution-dyed acrylic, which is made for sun and rain.

Are linen curtains good for a seaside home?

They look right but fade, crease and mildew faster. Linen-look polyester gives the look with less care.
