Short answer
Curtains go mouldy when they stay damp: touching glass that runs with condensation in air-conditioned rooms, hanging in rooms that never air, or being put back or stored before they are fully dry. Keep a small gap between curtain and glass, open the curtains and windows regularly, vacuum monthly, and dry curtains completely after washing. Catch spots early: brush them off outdoors, wash or sponge with mild detergent and dry thoroughly. Polyester resists mould far better than cotton or linen.
Why curtains get mould in Malaysia
| Cause | What happens |
|---|---|
| Air-conditioned rooms | Cold glass meets warm, humid air outside and inside; condensation forms and the curtain soaks it up where it touches |
| Closed, unused rooms | Humid air sits still; spores settle and grow on dusty fabric |
| Dust | Dust holds moisture and feeds mould, so dusty curtains go first |
| Wet after washing | Curtains rehung or stored while damp grow mildew in the folds |
| Natural fibres | Cotton and linen absorb more moisture than polyester and give mould more to grow on |
Good to know
The lining or the hem at the bottom of the window is usually where mould starts, because that is where condensation runs down and collects.
How to prevent mould
- Keep the curtain off the glass. Leave a gap between the fabric and the window, especially in air-conditioned bedrooms. A ceiling track set back from the glass helps.
- Air the room. Open the curtains and, when you can, the windows every day, so the window and fabric dry out.
- Wipe condensation from the glass and frame in the morning.
- Vacuum monthly with a soft brush to remove the dust mould feeds on.
- Dry completely. After washing, let curtains dry fully before storing; rehanging slightly damp is fine only in a ventilated room where they will dry quickly.
- Use a dehumidifier in rooms that are often closed, such as guest rooms and store rooms.
- Choose polyester for humid or air-conditioned rooms. See The Best Curtain Fabric for Malaysian Homes.
Tip
When you go away, leave the curtains slightly open and the air-conditioner off. A closed, cold room with curtains pressed against wet glass is the ideal place for mould.
How to remove mould spots
Act as soon as you see spots. Fresh mildew on polyester usually comes out; old, deep mildew on natural fibres may leave a permanent stain.
- Take the curtain outdoors and brush off loose spores with a soft brush, so they do not spread indoors.
- Check the care label before using any cleaner.
- Wash or sponge with mild detergent in cool water, as the fabric allows. See How to Wash Curtains.
- Dry thoroughly, in a breezy, shaded place. Dark colours fade in direct afternoon sun.
- Clean the window too: wipe the glass, frame and sill, or the mould will come back.
Watch out
Do not use chlorine bleach unless the care label allows it. It can fade colours, yellow some fabrics and damage coatings. Test any cleaner on a hidden corner first.
Mould by fabric type
| Fabric | What to do |
|---|---|
| Polyester sheer or dimout | Brush, then machine-wash cool and gentle if the label allows; dry fully |
| Coated blackout | Sponge gently; never scrub, wring or soak the coating |
| Velvet | Brush gently with the pile; professional cleaning for anything more |
| Cotton and linen | Act fast; professional cleaning for old or large marks |
| Lined curtains | Check the lining too; professional cleaning so face and lining do not shrink differently |
When to replace a curtain
Replace a curtain, or its lining, when mould keeps coming back after cleaning, when stains remain after professional cleaning, or when the fabric smells musty even when dry. A new lining alone often fixes a curtain whose face fabric is still sound. See Curtain Lining.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my curtains get mould?
They stay damp: usually from condensation on cold glass in air-conditioned rooms, from rooms that are never aired, or from being stored before they were fully dry. Dust makes it worse.
How do I get mould off curtains?
Brush off loose spores outdoors, then wash or sponge with mild detergent as the care label allows, and dry the curtain completely. Clean the window as well.
Can I use bleach on mouldy curtains?
Only if the care label allows it. Chlorine bleach can fade colours, yellow some fabrics and damage blackout coatings. Test any cleaner on a hidden corner first.
Which curtain fabric resists mould best?
Polyester. It absorbs very little moisture and dries quickly, so mould has less to grow on than in cotton or linen.
Why is the mould only at the bottom of my curtain?
Condensation runs down the glass and collects at the bottom of the window, where the hem and lining touch it. Keep a gap between the curtain and the glass.
Do air-conditioners cause mouldy curtains?
They can, indirectly. A cold window in a humid climate gathers condensation, and a curtain touching it stays damp. Wipe the glass, air the room and keep the curtain off the window.
