Short answer

Well-made polyester curtains often last around 5 to 10 years in a Malaysian home, longer if lined and out of strong sun. Sheers, unlined curtains on west-facing windows and cotton or linen usually wear out sooner. Replace curtains when they fade unevenly, tear or feel brittle, keep growing mould, have a cracked blackout coating, or no longer suit the room.

Good to know

These are rough guides, not guarantees. Orientation, care and how often curtains are opened and washed make a big difference.

What shortens a curtain's life

  • Sun: UV fades colour and weakens fibres, worst on west-facing windows. See Light-Fastness Explained.
  • Humidity and condensation: curtains touching cold, wet glass in air-conditioned rooms grow mould. See Mouldy Curtains.
  • Hot washing and tumble drying: shrink natural fibres and crack blackout coatings. See How to Wash Curtains.
  • Friction: hems dragging on the floor, and leading edges handled every day.
  • Pets and children: claws and hands on low hems.

When should you replace curtains?

  • Faded stripes along folds, or a different colour on the outer edge.
  • Fabric that tears easily or feels brittle, especially sheers.
  • Mould spots that come back after washing.
  • A blackout coating that is cracked, peeling or letting light through.
  • Heading tape that has perished, or hooks tearing out.
  • Shrunk curtains that no longer reach the floor.
  • A change in the room: a nursery, a home office, or a new sofa colour.

How to make curtains last longer

  • Line curtains on sunny windows. The lining takes the sun instead of the face fabric. See Curtain Lining.
  • Choose polyester for sunny and humid rooms. See Cotton vs Linen vs Polyester.
  • Close a sheer or the curtain before strong afternoon sun reaches the glass.
  • Keep curtains off wet glass and air rooms regularly.
  • Vacuum or shake monthly and wash gently when needed.
  • Swap pairs round occasionally so the same edge does not always face the sun.

Tip

Often only the sheer needs replacing. Keeping a good main curtain and changing the sheer refreshes a room at a fraction of the cost.

Frequently asked questions

How often should curtains be replaced?

Well-made, lined polyester curtains often last around 7 to 10 years; sheers and curtains on sunny windows usually sooner. Replace them when they fade, tear, grow mould or no longer suit the room.

Why do curtains fade on one side?

The side and folds that face the sun fade first. Lining the curtain and swapping pairs round occasionally helps.

Do lined curtains last longer?

Yes. The lining takes most of the sun, so the face fabric fades and weakens more slowly.

Can old curtains be relined?

Often, if the face fabric is still sound. A curtain maker can add a new lining or a detachable one.
