Most fabrics are made for one job. Curtain fabric needs drape, width and light control; upholstery fabric needs abrasion resistance and a firm hand. A multipurpose fabric sits between the two: soft enough to pleat and fold, firm enough to cover a cushion or a headboard.

Tip
Matching everything can look flat. Use the multipurpose fabric for the curtains and headboard, and a contrasting texture or pattern for a few cushions.
What to check before you buy
- Rub count for anything you sit on.
- Width. Some multipurpose and velvet fabrics are upholstery width rather than extra-wide; CINEMA, for example, is 150 cm wide, so curtains need joined widths.
- Weight and heading. Heavier multipurpose fabrics need a track rated for the weight, and suit French pleats well.
- Light. A multipurpose fabric is not usually blackout; add a blackout lining for bedrooms. See Curtain Lining.
- Care. Upholstered pieces cannot be machine-washed like a curtain; check the care label for both uses.
