Short answer

Start with a proper clean and steam; many tired curtains just need washing. Then fix what bothers you most: add a blackout or thermal lining for darkness, re-hem or add a contrast band to fix the length, replace only the sheer, or move the track to the ceiling to make the room look taller. Replace curtains that are faded, brittle or torn.

What should you try first?

  • Clean: wash or professionally clean, then steam. See How to Wash Curtains.
  • Dress the folds: rehang, arrange the folds and tie loosely for a day or two. See Why Curtains Don't Hang Straight.
  • Check the track: add gliders, clean and level it so curtains run smoothly.

Which small changes make the biggest difference?

ChangeFixesNotes
Add a liningLight leaking through, heat, a faded look from outsideBlackout or thermal lining sewn or clipped on. See Curtain Lining
Replace only the sheerA yellowed or grey sheerOften the cheapest big improvement
Re-hem or add a bandCurtains too short or too longA contrast band at the hem adds length
New tiebacks or holdbacksA tired, untidy stackSee Curtain Tiebacks and Holdbacks
Ceiling trackA low, cramped-looking windowCurtains may need lengthening

Can you dye old curtains?

Most curtains are polyester, which household dyes do not colour well; polyester needs special dyes at high temperature. Cotton and linen dye more easily but can shrink and dye unevenly, and coated blackouts should never be dyed. In most cases a new fabric gives a far better result.

When is it better to replace curtains?

  • The fabric tears easily or feels brittle, often on the sunny side.
  • Fading is patchy or the coating is cracking and flaking.
  • Mould spots remain after cleaning.
  • You want a different heading, such as S-fold, which needs a new track and remaking.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make old curtains look new?

Wash and steam them, dress the folds, and consider a new lining, a new sheer or a ceiling track.

Can you add a lining to existing curtains?

Yes. A curtain maker can sew one on, or a clip-on lining can be added to many headings.

Can polyester curtains be dyed?

Not well at home. Polyester needs special dyes at high temperature; new fabric usually gives a better result.

Is it worth replacing just the sheer?

Often yes. A fresh sheer behind existing main curtains makes a big difference for little cost.
