Short answer
A dobby weave is a fabric with a small, repeating geometric pattern woven into it on a dobby loom, such as tiny diamonds, dots, checks or ribs. It sits between plain weave and jacquard: more texture than a plain fabric, but simpler and smaller patterns than a jacquard. Like any woven pattern, it lasts as long as the fabric.
How is a dobby weave made?
A loom lifts the lengthwise warp threads in groups, on frames called shafts, to let the crosswise weft pass through. A plain weave needs only two alternating groups. A dobby loom controls many more shafts, so it can weave small repeating patterns. A jacquard loom controls each warp thread individually, so it can weave large, detailed designs. Dobby vs jacquard vs plain weave
| Plain weave | Dobby | Jacquard | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pattern | None | Small, geometric, repeating | Large, detailed, any shape |
| Texture | Flat | Subtle, often raised | Raised or tonal |
| Repeat | None | Small | Can be very large |
| Cost | Lowest | Moderate | Highest |
| Examples | Voile, plain dimout | Birdseye, waffle, small diamonds, piqué | Damask, brocade, florals |
Where does dobby work in a home?
- Curtains: a subtle texture that looks richer than a plain without a busy pattern; suits modern and Japandi rooms. See Japandi Curtains.
- Upholstery and cushions: small patterns hide wear and marks better than flat plains. See Textured Upholstery Fabric.
- Sheers: small woven dots or stripes add detail while keeping the light.
- Easy matching: small repeats need little or no extra fabric. See Pattern Repeat Explained.
Is dobby fabric durable?
The pattern is woven in, so it does not wash or rub off. Durability for upholstery depends on the yarn and weave density, so check the Martindale rub count. Some dobby patterns have short floats, threads lying on the surface, which can snag on claws or jewellery; look for tight, low-float designs for daily seating. See Martindale Rub Test Explained.
Frequently asked questions
What is a dobby weave?
A fabric with a small, repeating geometric pattern woven in on a dobby loom.
What is the difference between dobby and jacquard?
Dobby makes small, simple geometric patterns; jacquard controls every warp thread and can weave large, detailed designs.
Is dobby good for sofas?
It can be. Choose a tight, low-float dobby with a suitable rub count; small patterns hide wear well.
Does dobby fabric shrink?
That depends on the fibre, not the weave. Polyester dobbies are stable; cotton dobbies can shrink.
