Short answer

A wide-width sheer is woven more than 3 m wide so it can be turned sideways and made into a whole curtain with no vertical seams, however wide the window. That matters on sheers, because every seam shows against the light. Wide-width sheers suit most condo ceiling heights; check that the finished drop fits within the fabric width, use 2 times fullness or more, and add a weighted hem so the sheer hangs straight.

Why seams matter on a sheer

On an opaque curtain, a seam disappears into a fold. On a sheer, daylight shines through and every seam shows as a darker vertical line, repeated across the window. A wide-width sheer used sideways, or railroaded, removes those seams entirely: a 6 m wide curtain can be one continuous piece.

See Railroaded Fabric Explained for how railroading works.

Width and drop

Railroaded, the fabric's width becomes the curtain's height, less about 25 to 30 cm for the hem and heading.

Sheer widthRough maximum finished drop
About 300 cmAbout 2.7 m
About 320 cmAbout 2.9 m
About 325 cmAbout 2.95 m

In the JOTEX range, CALLIE is about 325 cm wide and 89 gsm, in 62 colourways, and VALERY about 320 cm wide and 106 gsm, with 20% linen. Most condo ceilings fall within these drops; double-height rooms need the fabric used up the roll with seams.

Making a wide sheer hang well

  • Fullness: 2 times the track width or more; sheers look thin and flat with less.
  • Heading: S-fold gives even waves across a wide window; French pleat suits formal rooms. See S-Fold Curtains.
  • Weighted hem: a lead or weight tape in the hem keeps a long sheer hanging straight and stops it flaring.
  • Ceiling track: wall to wall, so the sheer reads as one soft surface.
  • Length: about 1 cm above the floor, and the same drop or 1 to 2 cm shorter than the main curtain in front.

Tip

Ask your curtain maker how they finish the side hems on a railroaded sheer. The fabric's selvedge becomes the top or bottom edge, and the cut sides need a neat, narrow hem.

Choosing a quality sheer

  • Evenness: hold it to the light; there should be no thick or thin lines.
  • Colour: ivory and cream look warm, white crisp, grey calmer. See Sheer Curtains.
  • Texture: a plain voile for a clean look, a linen-look sheer for a natural one. See Voile vs Organza vs Chiffon.
  • Polyester: keeps its size, washes easily and holds up to Malaysian sun.

Frequently asked questions

What is a wide-width sheer?

A sheer woven more than 3 m wide, so it can be turned sideways and made into a whole curtain with no vertical seams.

Why are sheer curtains railroaded?

Because seams show through a sheer against the light. Railroading a wide-width sheer gives a seamless curtain across the whole window.

How tall can a seamless sheer curtain be?

Roughly the fabric width less 25 to 30 cm: about 2.7 m from a 300 cm sheer and about 2.95 m from a 325 cm sheer.

How much fullness do wide sheers need?

At least 2 times the track width, or more for a richer look.

Why does my sheer curtain flare at the bottom?

Sheers are light, so they lift and flare in air from fans and air-conditioners. A weighted hem keeps them hanging straight.
