Short answer
For sliding doors and floor-to-ceiling windows, the usual answer is S-fold curtains on a ceiling track, running wall to wall, with a sheer behind a dimout or blackout on a double track. Plan where the curtains stack when open so they clear the opening door panel, keep them about 1 cm off the floor, and use an extra-wide fabric railroaded for seamless curtains, as long as the ceiling height fits within the fabric width.
Why sliding doors need a different plan
- People walk through them, so curtains must open fully and stack out of the way.
- They are tall, often floor to ceiling, which affects fabric choice and drop.
- They are wide, so seams and stack-back matter more.
- They lead outside, to balconies that bring sun, rain on the glass and condensation in air-conditioned rooms.
Track and heading
| Option | Good for sliding doors? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| S-fold on a ceiling track | Best | Clean waves, compact stack, glides easily, no light above, suits motorised tracks |
| French pleat on a ceiling track | Good | Tailored; a little wider when stacked |
| Eyelet on a pole | Fair | Heavy daily sliding wears rings; light shows above the pole; poles need brackets that do not block the stack |
Many condos have a curtain box or recess in the ceiling above the doors, which takes a ceiling track neatly. Motorised tracks are popular on wide doors that are opened every day.
Plan the stack
When open, curtains bunch up into a stack. On a sliding door, that stack must sit beside the fixed glass panel, not across the panel that slides.
- Draw the curtain to the fixed side. A single curtain drawing one way often suits a door that slides one way.
- Extend the track past the door frame where the wall allows, so the stack sits on the wall.
- Allow for fullness. Fuller curtains and heavier fabrics stack wider; S-fold stacks most compactly.
Tip
Open the sliding door fully and mark where the opening ends. Keep the curtain stack beyond that mark so the door, and people, never catch it.
Double track: sheer and main
Floor-to-ceiling glass needs daytime privacy and night-time privacy, so most condos hang two layers: a sheer at the back and a dimout or blackout in front. See Blackout vs Dimout vs Sheer and Sheer Curtains.
Fabric, width and height
Wide, tall curtains look best without joins. Extra-wide fabrics, about 280 to 320 cm, can be railroaded so one length covers the whole width, as long as the finished drop fits within the fabric width, less about 25 to 30 cm for hems and heading.
| Fabric width | Rough maximum finished drop |
|---|---|
| About 280 cm | About 2.5 m |
| About 300 cm | About 2.7 m |
| About 320 cm | About 2.9 m |
Most condo ceilings fall within this range; taller rooms need the fabric used up the roll, with joins. In the JOTEX range, CALLIE sheer is about 325 cm wide, COMO about 320 cm and LAUREN about 300 cm. See Railroaded Fabric Explained.
Watch out
Measure the drop at both ends and the middle and use the shortest; condo floors and ceilings are rarely perfectly level. See How to Measure for Curtains.
Sun, condensation and balconies
- Sun: west-facing balconies take the strongest afternoon sun; line the main curtain or choose a blackout. See Light-Fastness Explained.
- Condensation: keep the curtain off the glass in air-conditioned rooms. See Mouldy Curtains.
- Length: about 1 cm above the floor, so curtains do not drag through the door track or get wet at the threshold.
Frequently asked questions
What curtains are best for sliding doors?
S-fold curtains on a ceiling track, usually with a sheer and a dimout or blackout on a double track. They glide easily and stack compactly beside the door.
Should curtains for sliding doors open to one side?
Often, yes. Drawing the curtain to the fixed glass panel keeps the stack clear of the door that slides.
Can floor-to-ceiling curtains be made without joins?
Yes, with an extra-wide fabric railroaded, as long as the drop fits within the fabric width less hem and heading: roughly 2.5 m from 280 cm fabric and 2.9 m from 320 cm.
How far above the floor should sliding door curtains be?
About 1 cm, so they hang straight and clear the door track and threshold.
Are blinds or curtains better for sliding doors?
Curtains on a ceiling track are usually easier for doors used every day, because they slide out of the way completely. See Curtains vs Blinds.
