Short answer
Balcony and poolside cushions need outdoor fabric, ideally solution-dyed acrylic, on quick-dry foam with removable zipped covers. Plan for where the sun, rain and wind actually hit, choose mid-tones and light colours that stay cooler and hide fading, mix one plain with one stripe or check for a finished look, and rinse off chlorine and sunscreen. Bring cushions in during long spells of heavy rain.
Start with the space
| Space | Main challenge | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Covered condo balcony | Driving rain, afternoon sun, little storage | Slim cushions, removable covers, a storage bench |
| High-floor balcony | Wind lifting light cushions | Ties or non-slip backs, heavier seat pads |
| Open terrace or rooftop | Full sun all day, heavy rain | Solution-dyed fabric, quick-dry foam, storage nearby |
| Pool deck | Wet swimmers, chlorine, sunscreen | Quick-dry foam, rinsing, mid-tone colours |
Tip
Spend one sunny day noting when sun and rain reach each seat. A balcony that is shaded all morning may take the full afternoon sun, which decides colour and fabric more than anything else.
Fabric: why outdoor matters
Indoor fabric fades, rots and grows mildew outside. Outdoor fabric is made to handle sun and wet. Solution-dyed acrylic, coloured through the fibre before it is spun, is the most fade-resistant choice and dries quickly. See Outdoor Fabric: Solution-Dyed Acrylic for how it works and how to make cushions that last.
Cushion types and fabric weights
| Cushion | Use | Fabric weight |
|---|---|---|
| Seat and back cushions | Sofas, armchairs, benches | Heavier, such as PATIO at about 340 gsm |
| Sun-lounger pads | Long, thin pads that bend | Medium to heavy, with quick-dry foam |
| Scatter cushions | Comfort and colour | Lighter, such as BREEZE or BRISA at about 260 gsm |
| Floor cushions and poufs | Extra seating on small balconies | Heavier and hard-wearing |
| Bench pads | Built-in or storage benches | Heavier, cut to fit exactly |
Colour and pattern outdoors
- Light and mid-tones stay cooler. Dark cushions in full sun get hot to sit on.
- Mid-tones hide fading and dirt better than very pale or very bright colours.
- One plain, one pattern. Plain seat cushions with striped or check scatter cushions look finished without being busy.
- Echo the view. Sea blues and sands by the pool; greens and earth tones beside planting.
In the JOTEX OUTDOOR range, PATIO is a plain in 64 colourways, CALMA a solution-dyed stripe, and DUNES a heavy acrylic check, so plains, stripes and checks can be coordinated in one scheme.
Pools: chlorine and sunscreen
- Rinse after swimming days. Chlorinated and salt water can leave residue; a rinse with fresh water keeps fabric clean.
- Towel first. Ask swimmers to sit on a towel; wet costumes soak cushions.
- Sunscreen stains. Oils and some sunscreen ingredients can leave marks. Sponge them off promptly with mild soap and lukewarm water.
Watch out
Do not use bleach or strong cleaners unless the fabric's care instructions allow it, and never on the foam or thread.
Storage and the rainy season
Even the best outdoor cushions last longer when they are not left in standing water. Stand cushions on their edges to dry after rain, store them in a ventilated box or bench during long wet spells, and make sure they are completely dry before storing, to avoid mildew. Removable zipped covers can be washed according to their care label.
