Short answer
Brush outdoor cushions down regularly, and clean them by sponging with mild soap and lukewarm water, rinsing thoroughly and letting them air-dry on their edge. Deal with bird droppings and spills promptly, rinse off chlorine and sunscreen, avoid harsh cleaners and pressure washers, and bring cushions in during long spells of heavy rain.
How often should you clean outdoor cushions?
- Weekly or after storms: brush off leaves, dust and sand.
- Straight away: bird droppings, food and drink spills.
- After swimming: rinse off chlorine and sunscreen.
- Every few months: a full clean with mild soap and water.
How do you clean outdoor fabric?
- Brush off loose dirt first with a soft brush.
- Sponge with mild soap in lukewarm water, working gently over the whole panel so it dries evenly.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water; soap left in the fabric attracts dirt.
- Stand cushions on their edge to air-dry fully, in the shade if possible.
- For removable covers, follow the collection's care instructions before machine washing.
Watch out
Avoid harsh cleaners, solvents and pressure washers held close to the fabric. They can damage the yarn and any finish, and drive dirt deeper.
This follows the care advice in Outdoor Fabric: Solution-Dyed Acrylic.
Why do outdoor cushions get mildew spots?
Mildew grows where dirt and moisture sit for days: on dirty fabric, inside foam that stays wet, or on cushions stacked damp. Clean the surface, dry the cushion completely, and store it dry. Spots that remain after cleaning may need a stronger treatment; only use one the collection's care instructions allow, and test it on a hidden area. See Mouldy Curtains for how mould starts.
How do you protect cushions from chlorine and sunscreen?
Pool water and sunscreen can leave marks and discolour fabric over time. Rinse cushions with fresh water after a pool day, put a towel down when sitting with sunscreen on, and choose mid-tones that hide marks. See Balcony and Poolside Cushions.
How do you store cushions in the rainy season?
- Bring cushions under cover during long spells of heavy rain.
- Store them only when completely dry, standing up so air can circulate.
- Use breathable covers or bags, not sealed plastic, which traps moisture.
- Quick-dry outdoor foam helps cushions dry out after rain.
