How to Choose Sofa Fabric for Malaysian Homes

The five things that decide a sofa fabric
- Durability. Measured by the Martindale rub count. Match it to how hard the sofa will be used; see Martindale Rub Test Explained.
- Fibre. Polyester and acrylic handle heat, humidity and sun better than cotton, linen or viscose.
- Weave and surface. Tight, flat or short-pile surfaces wear best. Loops and long floats can snag on claws, rings and zips.
- Colour and pattern. Mid-tones and textured or patterned fabrics hide everyday marks better than very pale or very dark plains.
- Cleaning. Check how the fabric can be cleaned before you choose it, and consider removable covers for family sofas.

Sofa fabric for Malaysia's climate
- Humidity. Natural fibres absorb moisture and, in rooms without air-conditioning, can develop mildew spots. Polyester and acrylic absorb very little and dry quickly.
- Sun. Strong sun fades most fabrics. Keep sofas out of direct afternoon sun, or choose solution-dyed acrylic, whose colour runs right through the fibre.
- Heat. Dense piles such as velvet feel warmer to sit on. In an air-conditioned room this hardly matters; in an open-air living area, a flatter weave is cooler.
- Dust. Tight weaves and short piles are easier to vacuum clean than loose, open textures.
Sofa fabric for pets and children
Choose surfaces with nothing for claws to hook into. A tight flat weave, such as TEKUSU OMAKE, or a short-pile velvet is better than boucle, loose chenille or open textures with loops. Aim for 25,000 rubs or more, a mid-tone colour or a small pattern that hides hair and marks, and a fabric that can be spot-cleaned. Pale fabrics can pick up dye from new denim over time. If you choose a light colour, expect to clean it more often.

Colour and pattern
- Mid-tones such as greige, taupe, stone, sage and slate hide everyday wear best.
- Very dark plains show dust, lint and pet hair; very pale plains show marks and dye transfer.
- Textured weaves, melanges and small patterns disguise wear better than flat plains.

Caring for a fabric sofa
- Vacuum weekly with an upholstery brush to lift dust before it works into the weave.
- Turn and swap seat and back cushions regularly so they wear and fade evenly.
- Blot spills at once with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub, which spreads the stain and damages the surface.
- Test any cleaner on a hidden area first, and follow the fabric's care instructions.
