Short answer

Polyester is the practical choice for most curtains and sofas in Malaysia: it resists fading, hardly shrinks, creases little and dries fast in humid air. Cotton feels soft and natural but can shrink, crease and fade faster. Linen has a crisp, textured look but creases readily, can change length with humidity and weakens in strong sun. Blends give much of the natural look with less upkeep, which is why most linen-look and cotton-look fabrics sold today are polyester-rich.

These are general fibre traits. The weave, finish and dye matter too, so check each collection's care label. See The Best Curtain Fabric for Malaysian Homes for the full fibre table, including viscose.

For curtains

  • Polyester for sunny windows, bedrooms that need lining, rentals and anywhere curtains are washed often. See Polyester Curtain Fabric.
  • Cotton and cotton blends for a soft, natural look and prints. In the JOTEX range, ORGANIC is 100% cotton, FAY is 50% polyester and 50% cotton, and DREAMS is 65% polyester and 35% cotton.
  • Linen blends for the linen texture with fewer creases: the VALERY sheer (80% polyester, 20% linen), the AMAYA blackout (85% polyester, 15% linen) and PRANA (91% polyester, 9% linen). See Linen-Look Curtains.

Watch out

Cotton- and linen-rich curtains can shrink when washed. Line them on sunny windows and ask your curtain maker to allow a deep hem. See Why Curtains Shrink.

For sofas and upholstery

  • Polyester dominates performance upholstery: velvets, textured weaves and chenilles with high rub counts that clean well. See How to Choose Sofa Fabric.
  • Cotton feels lovely but stains and fades faster; best on loose covers that can be washed.
  • Linen looks relaxed but creases and marks easily on seats; better for headboards, cushions and occasional chairs.

For daily seating, check the Martindale rub count whatever the fibre. See Martindale Rub Test Explained.

Is polyester less eco-friendly?

Polyester is made from oil, while cotton and linen are plant fibres. But a long-lasting polyester curtain that does not fade, shrink or go mouldy may need replacing far less often in Malaysia's climate. Recycled polyester reduces the use of new oil-based material. See Recycled Polyester Fabric.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for curtains, cotton or polyester?

Polyester for most Malaysian homes, because it resists fading, shrinking and mould. Cotton suits a soft, natural look where you can line it and wash it carefully.

Are linen curtains good in Malaysia?

Pure linen creases, fades and can change length with humidity. A polyester-linen blend gives the look with much less upkeep.

Does polyester feel cheap?

Not necessarily. Modern polyester can feel soft, matt and natural, and imitates linen, cotton and velvet closely. Feel a sample.

Which fibre is best for a sofa?

Usually polyester, in a velvet, textured weave or chenille with a suitable rub count. Cotton and linen suit loose covers and light-use pieces.
