Short answer

Handle, or hand, is how a fabric feels to touch: soft, crisp, smooth or textured. Drape is how it falls and folds when it hangs, and body is how much it holds its own shape. Fibre, yarn, weave, weight and finish all affect them. Soft, fluid fabrics suit S-fold and sheers; fabrics with more body suit French pleats and upholstery.

How do you judge handle and drape from a sample?

  • Feel it between finger and thumb, then rub it lightly: is it soft, crisp, smooth or textured?
  • Gather it in your hand into folds, as it will be made up.
  • Hang it: hold a large cutting up by one edge and watch how it falls.
  • Drape it over the back of a chair or your arm to see how it folds.
  • Compare two or three fabrics side by side; differences are easier to see.

Frequently asked questions

What does fabric handle mean?

How a fabric feels to touch, such as soft, crisp, smooth or textured. It is also called the hand.

What is fabric drape?

How a fabric falls and folds when it hangs. Fluid fabrics fall in soft folds; stiffer ones stand away.

Which fabrics drape best for curtains?

Soft, medium-weight fabrics with a fluid drape, especially for S-fold. French pleats need a little more body.

Does a heavier fabric always drape better?

Not always. Weight gives deeper folds, but a stiff backing or tight weave can make a heavy fabric hang stiffly.
