Short answer

Act fast and blot, never rub: press a clean, dry white cloth on the spill to lift as much as possible. Check the sofa's care label, test any cleaner on a hidden spot, then work from the outside of the stain inwards with as little liquid as possible. Water-based spills usually come out with cool water and a little mild detergent; oily ones need a dry-cleaning solvent or a professional. Do not soak the cushion or use heat until the stain has gone.

The first minute

  • Blot, do not rub. Press a clean, dry white cloth or paper towel onto the spill and lift. Rubbing spreads the stain and damages the surface.
  • Scrape solids off gently with a spoon or blunt knife.
  • Work from the outside in, so the stain does not spread into a bigger ring.
  • Use little liquid. Water that soaks into the foam brings stains back up as it dries and can leave a ring.

Stain-resistant fabrics, such as the YarnGuard performance velvets, give you more time to blot, but every fabric stains if a spill is left to soak in. See Pet-Friendly and Stain-Resistant Sofa Fabric.

Check the cleaning code first

Many upholstery labels carry a cleaning code. Follow it before any general advice, including this guide.

CodeMeaning
WWater-based cleaners are fine
SSolvent (dry-cleaning) cleaners only; no water
W/S or SWEither water-based or solvent cleaners
XVacuum or brush only; no liquid cleaners; professional cleaning

Watch out

Always test any cleaner on a hidden area, such as the back or underside, and let it dry before treating the stain itself.

Stain by stain

StainWhat to do
Coffee, tea, juice, soft drinksBlot; dab with cool water and a drop of mild detergent; blot with clean water; blot dry
Oil, grease, food, body oilsBlot; sprinkle with baking soda or cornflour, leave 15 minutes, vacuum; then a dry-cleaning solvent if the code allows, or a professional
Red wine and curryBlot at once; dab with cool water and mild detergent; repeat patiently; professional help for old stains
InkDab with a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth, testing first; blot, do not spread; professional help on delicate fabrics
Pet urine and accidentsBlot thoroughly; use an enzyme cleaner made for pet stains, tested first; blot with clean water and dry
MudLet it dry completely, then brush and vacuum; treat any mark left as a water-based stain
BloodCool water only, never warm; blot repeatedly
Chewing gumHarden with an ice cube in a bag, then pick off gently

These are general methods; the fabric's care code comes first.

Velvet and textured sofas

  • Velvet: blot with as little water as possible, then brush the pile gently in its natural direction while it dries. Never rub, iron or press a damp velvet. See What Is Velvet Fabric?
  • Textured weaves: blot rather than scrub, because scrubbing pushes the stain into the texture and lifts loops. See Textured Upholstery Fabric.
  • Pale colours: new dark denim can transfer dye. Clean marks early; they are harder to shift once set.

Mistakes that set a stain

  • Rubbing or scrubbing the stain.
  • Using hot water or a hairdryer before the stain has gone; heat sets many stains.
  • Soaking the cushion, which leaves a ring as it dries.
  • Strong household cleaners and bleach, which can strip colour.
  • Putting cushion covers in the washing machine when the label says not to; they can shrink and no longer fit.

Tip

Keep a small kit ready: white cloths, mild detergent, a spray bottle of water, baking soda and a soft brush. Most stains come out when treated in the first few minutes.

When to call a professional

Call a professional upholstery cleaner for old or large stains, code S or X fabrics, velvet and delicate weaves, and anything that has spread after a first attempt. A professional clean every one to two years also keeps a sofa looking better for longer. See How to Choose Sofa Fabric.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a coffee stain from a fabric sofa?

Blot at once, then dab with cool water and a drop of mild detergent, blot with clean water and blot dry. Check the care code and test on a hidden area first.

How do I get oil out of a fabric sofa?

Blot, sprinkle with baking soda or cornflour to absorb the oil, leave it for 15 minutes and vacuum. If a mark remains, use a dry-cleaning solvent if the code allows, or call a professional.

What do W and S mean on sofa labels?

W means water-based cleaners are fine; S means solvent cleaners only, no water; W/S means either; X means vacuum only and professional cleaning.

How do I clean pet urine from a sofa?

Blot thoroughly, then use an enzyme cleaner made for pet stains, tested on a hidden area first. Blot with clean water and let it dry fully.

Can I use vinegar on a fabric sofa?

Diluted white vinegar is sometimes used on water-safe fabrics, but it can affect some dyes and finishes. Follow the care code and test on a hidden area first.

Why did a water ring appear after cleaning?

Too much water soaked in and dried unevenly. Use as little liquid as possible, work from the outside in, and blot the area dry.
