Short answer

The best sofa fabric for pets has a tight weave or a short, dense pile with nothing for claws to hook into, is rated at 25,000 Martindale rubs or more, and comes in a mid-tone that hides hair. Polyester velvets and tight flat weaves are good choices; boucle, loose chenille, open textures and silk are not. A stain-resistant fabric gives you time to blot a spill, but no fabric is stain-proof or scratch-proof.

What pets and children do to a sofa

ProblemWhat helps
Claws catching and pulling threadsA tight weave or short cut pile, with no loops on the surface
Hair clinging to the fabricA smooth surface and a colour close to the pet's coat
Spills, sticky hands and accidentsA fabric that absorbs slowly and can be spot-cleaned
Body oils and paw marks on arms and seatsMid-tones, textures and small patterns
Constant jumping, sitting and playA high rub count: 25,000 or more, 40,000 for the heaviest use

Fabrics that work, and fabrics to avoid

FabricWith petsWhy
Short-pile polyester velvetGoodNo loops for claws; hair lifts off with a lint roller or damp rubber glove
Tight flat weaveGoodSmooth and dense, so claws slide off rather than hook in
Tight textured weaveGoodHides hair and marks, if the texture has no loose loops
ChenilleFairSoft and hard-wearing, but loose chenille can pull
Linen and open weavesPoorSnags easily and marks with water and oils
BouclePoorLooped yarn is easy for claws to catch and pull
SilkPoorDelicate, marks with water and shows every scratch

Tip

Scratch a sample gently with a fingernail. If threads lift into loops, claws will do the same. A good pet fabric shows nothing, or a mark that brushes away.

Rub count and construction

The Martindale rub count measures how well a fabric resists abrasion. For a sofa shared with pets or children, look for 25,000 rubs or more; for the busiest family sofa, 40,000. See Martindale Rub Test for how the test works.

Rub count is not the whole story. A fabric can survive 40,000 rubs and still snag if its surface has loose loops, so check the construction too: a dense weave or a short, tightly anchored pile.

What stain-resistant really means

A stain-resistant fabric slows liquids from soaking in, either through the fibre itself or through a finish, so a spill sits on the surface for long enough to blot it away. Polyester absorbs much less than cotton or linen, which helps on its own.

  • Resistant, not proof. Left long enough, most spills will mark most fabrics. Blot at once with a clean, dry cloth, and never rub.
  • Not waterproof. Liquid can still pass through seams and into the cushion foam.
  • Finishes age. Applied finishes can weaken with years of use and cleaning. Follow the care instructions.

Watch out

Test any cleaner on a hidden area first. Some household cleaners, and pet-stain products, can lighten or ring a fabric.

YarnGuard and other hard-wearing JOTEX fabrics

YarnGuard is the JOTEX performance upholstery brand, made for busy homes, hospitality and commercial seating. Its PURIFY and REPEL are 100% polyester velvets of about 450 gsm, rated at 40,000 Martindale rubs: a short, dense pile with nothing for claws to hook into.

Other collections rated at 40,000 rubs include the textured weaves BLAKE, MARC and VELA, and TEKUSU's OMAKE flat weave and SUZUME texture. A tight flat weave such as OMAKE is one of the safest choices with cats.

Colour and pattern

  • Match the pet. A colour close to your pet's coat hides hair between cleans.
  • Choose mid-tones. Greige, taupe, stone, sage and slate hide marks better than very dark or very pale plains.
  • Use texture. Textured weaves, melanges and small patterns disguise wear and hair better than flat plains.

Living with pets and a fabric sofa

  • Vacuum weekly with an upholstery brush; lift hair in between with a lint roller or a damp rubber glove.
  • For pet accidents, blot, then use an enzyme cleaner made for pet stains, tested on a hidden area first.
  • Choose removable, zipped cushion covers so they can be cleaned or replaced.
  • Put a washable throw on your pet's favourite spot.
  • Keep claws trimmed, and give cats a scratching post near the sofa.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sofa fabric for cats?

A tight flat weave or a short, dense velvet, with no loops for claws to catch, rated at 25,000 Martindale rubs or more. Avoid boucle, loose chenille and open weaves.

What is the best sofa fabric for dogs?

A hard-wearing polyester velvet or tight weave rated at 25,000 rubs or more, in a colour close to the dog's coat. Add removable covers or a washable throw on its favourite spot.

Is velvet good with cats and dogs?

A short-pile polyester velvet is one of the better choices: it has no loops for claws, and hair lifts off easily. It can show pressure marks, which brush out.

Is a stain-resistant sofa fabric waterproof?

No. It slows spills from soaking in so you can blot them, but liquid can still get through seams into the foam. Blot spills at once and never rub.

How do I get pet hair off a fabric sofa?

Vacuum with an upholstery brush, then use a lint roller or a slightly damp rubber glove, wiping in one direction. A smooth, tight fabric releases hair most easily.

Which sofa fabrics should I avoid with pets?

Boucle, loose chenille, open or loosely woven linens, and silk. Their loops and open surfaces catch claws, and they mark easily.
