Short answer

Mid-tones hide everyday dirt best: greige, taupe, stone, mushroom, sage, slate and muted blues. Very pale sofas show food and dye from jeans; very dark plains show dust, lint and pet hair. A melange, slub or small-pattern weave hides marks better than a flat plain, and with a pet, choose a shade close to its coat. For wear, the weave and rub count matter most.

Texture matters as much as colour

  • Melange and heathered weaves mix two or more tones, so marks and hair blend in.
  • Textured weaves break up the surface; a flat plain shows every mark. See Textured Upholstery Fabric.
  • Small patterns disguise wear; large plains in one flat colour do not.
  • Velvet changes shade with the pile, which hides some marks but shows pressure and pet hair on dark colours. See What Is Velvet Fabric?

Tip

Look at a large sample in your own room by day and at night, and rub it with a dark cloth and a pale one. You will see quickly what it shows.

What sofa colour is best with pets and children?

  • Match the pet: a colour close to your pet's coat hides hair between cleans.
  • Children: mid-tone textured weaves, plus removable cushion covers.
  • Avoid very pale plains on the seats; save them for headboards or occasional chairs.

See Pet-Friendly and Stain-Resistant Sofa Fabric.

Colour is not the whole answer

A good colour hides dirt; it does not stop wear. For daily seating, choose a tight weave with about 15,000 to 25,000 Martindale rubs, or 25,000 or more for families and pets. In the JOTEX range, YarnGuard PURIFY and REPEL velvets and the textured weaves BLAKE, MARC and VELA are rated at 40,000 rubs. See How to Choose Sofa Fabric.

Good to know

Dark sofas in sunny rooms can fade unevenly. Keep any sofa out of direct afternoon sun, or draw a sheer. See Light-Fastness Explained.
