Short answer
Both can last for years; the right choice depends on the room. Fabric breathes, so it feels comfortable in Malaysian heat and does not turn cold in air-conditioning, and it comes in far more colours and textures. Leather wipes clean easily and suits people who prefer a smooth surface, but it can feel sticky in heat, shows claw scratches and needs conditioning. PU faux leather is cheaper but often peels or cracks within a few years. A tightly woven or performance fabric is the most practical all-round choice for most homes.

When fabric is the better choice
- Rooms without constant air-conditioning, where leather feels sticky.
- Families with cats, with a tight weave or short-pile velvet. See Pet-Friendly Sofa Fabric.
- A specific colour or texture to match the room.
- Long-term value: a good frame can be reupholstered in new fabric instead of replaced. See How Much Fabric to Reupholster.
When leather may suit better
- Air-conditioned rooms and people who prefer a smooth surface.
- Homes where spills are frequent and wiping is preferred, with no cats.
- A classic look that ages with a patina.
Good to know
PU, or bonded, faux leather is not the same as genuine leather. It is often cheaper but tends to peel or crack within a few years, especially in heat and sun.
Choosing a practical fabric
For a fabric sofa in daily use, look for 15,000 to 25,000 Martindale rubs, or 25,000 or more with children and pets, in a tight weave or short-pile polyester velvet and a mid-tone colour. In the JOTEX range, the YarnGuard PURIFY and REPEL performance velvets and the textured weaves BLAKE, MARC and VELA are rated at 40,000 rubs. See How to Choose Sofa Fabric.
Tip
Sit on fabric and leather samples in the room at the warmest time of day with the air-conditioning off. Comfort in heat is the difference most people notice first.

Is a fabric or leather sofa better in Malaysia?
For most homes, fabric: it breathes in the heat, does not turn cold in air-conditioning, and comes in far more colours. Leather suits air-conditioned rooms and people who prefer wiping clean.
Is a fabric sofa or leather sofa better with cats?
A tight-weave fabric or short-pile velvet is usually better. Claw scratches show on leather, and faux leather can puncture.
Does a leather sofa get hot?
It can feel warm and sticky in a room without air-conditioning, and cold at first in an air-conditioned room. Fabric stays more neutral.
Is PU leather durable?
PU or bonded faux leather is often cheaper but tends to peel or crack within a few years, especially in heat and sun.
Which lasts longer, fabric or leather?
Both can last many years. A fabric sofa on a good frame can be reupholstered when worn; genuine leather develops a patina but needs regular conditioning.
