Short answer
A little regular care keeps curtains and sofas looking new for years. Vacuum sofas weekly and curtains monthly, rotate cushions every few months, wash sheers every 3 to 6 months and heavier curtains once or twice a year, and book a professional upholstery clean every year or two. In Malaysia, add extra care before the rainy season and before major festivals.

What changes through the year in Malaysia?
- Before festivals such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Deepavali: wash curtains a week or two ahead so they are dry and rehung in time. See Chinese New Year Curtains and Deepavali Curtains.
- Before and during the rainy season, roughly November to March: keep curtains off wet glass, wash only when they can dry fully, and bring outdoor cushions in before storms. See Rainy Season Care.

What should you do straight away?
