Short answer
Clean a fabric headboard by checking its cleaning code, vacuuming it monthly with a soft brush, and blotting marks with a barely damp cloth and mild detergent, working from the outside in. Hair-oil and make-up marks usually need a solvent upholstery cleaner. Use as little water as possible, dry evenly with a fan, and brush velvet pile once dry. Call a professional for large stains.
Check the cleaning code
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| W | Water-based cleaners are fine |
| S | Solvent cleaners only; no water |
| W/S or SW | Either |
| X | Vacuum or brush only; professional cleaning |
Watch out
Test any cleaner on a hidden spot, such as the back or a lower corner, and let it dry before treating a visible mark.
How often should you clean a headboard?
- Monthly: vacuum with a soft upholstery brush, top to bottom, including seams and buttons.
- As needed: blot spills and marks the same day.
- Every year or two: a professional upholstery clean, especially for pale or velvet headboards.
How do you remove hair-oil marks?
The most common headboard mark is a darker patch where heads rest, from hair oil, skin and products. Oily marks do not lift with water alone.
- Code S or W/S: dab a solvent upholstery cleaner onto a clean cloth, not the fabric, and blot from the outside in.
- Code W: a cloth barely dampened with water and a drop of mild washing-up liquid, then a clean damp cloth to rinse.
- Never scrub; it spreads oil and roughens the surface.

Velvet headboards
Use the least moisture possible, blot rather than wipe, and brush the pile gently in its natural direction as it dries. Lift crushed pile by holding a steamer just off the surface. Never iron the face. See How to Clean a Velvet Sofa.
Drying and preventing marks
- Dry evenly with a fan, not a hairdryer, to avoid water rings.
- Back cushions or a pillow between head and headboard take most of the wear.
- Mid-tone and textured fabrics hide marks better than pale plains. See Sofa Fabric Colours That Hide Dirt.
- Removable covers or panels make cleaning far easier; ask for them when ordering.
