Short answer
Upholstered wall panels, fabric wrapped over padded boards, turn a plain wall into a soft, quiet feature: behind a bed, in a media room or along a hotel corridor. Because walls are rarely rubbed, most curtain and multipurpose fabrics work. Plan the layout so patterns line up and velvet pile runs the same way on every panel, keep panels off damp walls, and use fire-retardant fabric in commercial projects.
Where fabric panels work
| Space | Why fabric | Typical fabric |
|---|---|---|
| Behind a bed | A full-wall headboard; soft and warm | Velvet, texture or quiet jacquard |
| Hotel rooms and suites | Luxury, softer acoustics | Velvet, jacquard, textured weaves |
| Media rooms | Absorbs echo and reflections | Dense velvet or heavy texture |
| Dining rooms and private dining | Warmth and quieter conversation | Damask, velvet, texture |
| Offices and meeting rooms | Softer acoustics, pin-up surface | Textured or flat weaves |
Choosing the fabric
- Wear: walls are touched but rarely rubbed, so a high rub count matters only at seat height, such as behind a banquette.
- Weight: medium to heavy fabrics wrap boards smoothly; very light fabrics may show the padding and need a backing.
- Texture and pile: velvets and textures add depth and absorb more sound.
- Colour: a mid-tone hides marks at hand and head height.
Good choices in the JOTEX range include VELVET and CINEMA velvets, the MONTI damask and MERCATO herringbone jacquards, and textured weaves such as BLAKE. See Multipurpose Fabric Explained.
Planning the layout
- Panel size: often set by the fabric width and the wall; fewer, larger panels look calmer.
- Pattern alignment: jacquards and damasks must line up across every panel joint, which needs extra fabric for the repeat.
- Pile direction: on velvet, the pile must run the same way on every panel or neighbouring panels will look like different colours.
- Railroading: turning an extra-wide fabric sideways can cover a wide panel without a seam; check the pattern and pile direction first. See Railroaded Fabric Explained.
- Cut-outs: plan sockets and switches before cutting.
Tip
Draw the wall to scale with every panel and mark where the main motif or seam falls. Fabric for panels is cut once; mistakes cannot be re-used.
Humidity and walls
In Malaysia, check that the wall is dry before fixing panels. A damp external wall or one next to a bathroom can grow mould behind the fabric. Polyester fabrics absorb less moisture than cotton or linen. See Mouldy Curtains.
Fire safety and cleaning
Wall coverings in hotels, offices and other public buildings are usually required to meet a fire standard; check the project specification and ask for the fabric's test report. See Hotel and Office Curtain Fabric.
Vacuum panels with a soft brush, blot marks rather than rubbing, and test any cleaner on a hidden spot. Removable panels are easier to clean or replace.
Frequently asked questions
What fabric is best for upholstered wall panels?
Medium to heavy fabrics such as velvet, jacquard and textured weaves wrap boards smoothly and add depth. Walls get little rubbing, so most curtain and multipurpose fabrics work.
Do fabric wall panels reduce noise?
They reduce echo inside the room, especially dense velvets and textures over padding. They do little for noise from next door.
Can curtain fabric be used for wall panels?
Usually, yes, because walls are rarely rubbed. Lighter curtain fabrics may need a backing so the padding does not show through.
How do I clean fabric wall panels?
Vacuum with a soft brush and blot marks with a slightly damp cloth, testing any cleaner on a hidden spot first.
Do hotel wall panels need fire-retardant fabric?
Usually, yes. The project specification and local fire authority set the standard; ask for the fabric's test report.
