Short answer

A water-repellent fabric makes water bead on the surface for a while, usually thanks to a finish, but it lets water through under pressure or over time. A waterproof fabric stops water passing at all, usually because it is coated or laminated, which also makes it less breathable. A stain-resistant fabric slows spills from soaking in so you can blot them. None of these make a fabric stain-proof, and seams can still let water through.

Water-repellent fabric

Most water-repellent fabrics carry a finish that lowers the surface tension of the fibres, so water forms beads instead of spreading. It is ideal for outdoor cushions caught in a light shower and for sofas where a spilled drink can be blotted before it soaks in.

  • It is not waterproof: heavy rain, standing water or pressure, such as sitting on a wet cushion, push water through.
  • Finishes can weaken with use, cleaning and sun over the years; follow the care instructions.
  • Water-repellent fabric still breathes, so it dries out and feels like normal fabric.

Waterproof fabric

A waterproof fabric has a coating or membrane that physically blocks water. Coated fabrics are used for awnings, covers and some outdoor uses. Because the coating also blocks air, a waterproof fabric on a seat can feel hot and sweaty, and water can collect underneath if it cannot escape.

Even a waterproof fabric lets water in at needle holes and seams unless they are sealed, so a waterproof cushion cover is about the whole construction, not just the cloth.

Stain-resistant fabric

Stain resistance can come from the fibre itself, since polyester absorbs far less than cotton or linen, from a finish, or both. It buys you time: blot a spill at once and it usually lifts. Left to soak, most spills will still mark. See Pet-Friendly and Stain-Resistant Sofa Fabric and How to Remove Stains from a Fabric Sofa.

Which do you need?

UseWhat to look for
Family sofaStain resistance and a tight weave; blot spills quickly
Dining chairsStain resistance; mid-tones
Covered balcony cushionsOutdoor fabric, ideally solution-dyed acrylic, with water repellency and quick-dry foam
Fully exposed cushionsOutdoor fabric plus quick-dry foam; bring in during long rain
Covers and awningsCoated, waterproof fabric made for the job
CurtainsNone of these are usually needed; choose for light, look and care

Tip

Ask exactly what a claim means and how it was tested. "Water-resistant" and "easy-clean" have no fixed meaning; a test result or care instruction tells you far more.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between water-repellent and waterproof?

Water-repellent fabric makes water bead and run off for a while, but water gets through under pressure or over time. Waterproof fabric stops water passing at all, usually with a coating, and is less breathable.

Is stain-resistant fabric waterproof?

No. It slows spills from soaking in so you can blot them, but liquid can still pass through, especially at seams and into foam.

Are outdoor cushions waterproof?

Most outdoor cushion fabric is water-repellent rather than waterproof, so it breathes and dries. Quick-dry foam lets rain drain through. Bring cushions in during long wet spells.

Does a water-repellent finish last forever?

No. It can weaken with use, cleaning and sun over the years. Follow the fabric's care instructions.

Do curtains need to be water-repellent?

Usually not. Choose curtains for light control, look and easy care, and keep them off wet glass to prevent mould.
